Oh yeah, last weekend I went to my Mosaics 101: Intro to Mosaics class at the Institute of Mosaic Arts in Oakland. It was amazing! I made a mosaic of Thea, the bear of my heart. I didn’t know what sort of finished-product we’d be leaving with, but as soon as the instructor said we needed to do a mosaic with a simple and prominent focal point, I had this bitch in mind.

Really, I learned a ton and left feeling really happy and confident that this is something I’ll keep doing. I made the decision not to purchase any supplies, since I’d like to take another class and really solidify my knowledge base before I splurge for the materials I’d need to do these bad boys on my own. But, I did buy a book, and I’ve already signed up for my next class, so I will consider this a success. Now everyone else go do something you’ve always dreamed of doing. It feels good!

Just signed up for Mosaic 101 at the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland. So of course now I am just looking at pictures of beautiful mosaics and telling myself that I’ll never be that talented and I am destined to fail but, still, I will go through with this!

I’ve been thinking a lot about ‘direction’, regarding the mosaics I will make when I start making mosaics, and more and more I come back to the idea of doing people.
This is nice affirmation/inspiration.
Also just imagined this as a dazzling commentary on Kim Kardashian’s recent ‘black and white’ wedding.

This weekend’s trip to Berkeley proved a successful bit of sightseeing for the amateur mosaic enthusiast (me). My first find was that amazing mosaic water fountain (the pictures don’t do it justice), dedicated to the ‘Young Ladies Club’, the first-ever woman’s organization on the Berkeley campus (or so said the accompanying plaque). After that, we happened upon the two beautiful mosaics of Howard Hall (I was only able to photograph that one), which were installed in 1936 as part of The New Deal/WPA Federal Art Project. The one that I got a good shot of, by F. Alston Swift, is meant to ‘allegorically depict music and painting.’ History!

I was also thrilled to come across a storefront done entirely in rough plate mosaic (instantly reminded of How To Make an American Quilt, for those of you who understand that reference), but was disappointed to realize that it was 1) a Wet Seal and 2) The same plates/design over and over again. Overall, still an exciting day.

When The Noodle and I get back from our August trip to Boston/NYC, I plan to treat myself to a beginners course at the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland. I’ve been wanting to make mosaics for far too long. Time to get down to business.
